Description

This document outlines policies and procedures followed by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas in dealing with some situations related to regulated drinking water and wastewater systems that are not covered by the regulations. The information is used by EPA staff when assessing applications related to EPEA approvals or authorizations of municipal drinking water and wastewater systems. This includes procedures for protecting water bodies, calculating effluent limit for discharge too water bodies and land, considering alternative treatment technology and for options for improving quality of stormwater. The manual has been revised to stream processes for considering new technology and to remove outdated material on the protocol for responding to failed bacterial tests in drinking water systems.

The document included five key strategies which together laid out the department's blueprint for the future of the irrigation industry in Alberta. To meet the Water for Life strategy's third goal to provide reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy Alberta's water, managers and agencies may consider many potential sources of water and a wide array of supply storage and management methods. In 2008, Alberta Environment and Water commissioned a review of methods for water supply storage and management that have never or rarely been used in Alberta. All the methods in the report are applicable to Alberta's mountain and prairie regions and all have been used in other parts of the world.
