Description

This study developed numeric nutrient target ranges, representing low, moderate and high risk of aquatic ecosystem impairment, for small agricultural streams in Alberta in the absence of Alberta-specific numeric nutrient water quality guidelines. The transport of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, from agricultural areas into surface water can lead to eutrophication of waterbodies. As a user of water, Alberta’s agriculture sector has a vested interest in surface water protection. Numeric guidelines for nutrients in surface waters serve a valuable role as benchmarks for water quality monitoring and watershed management programs, and agricultural sustainability initiatives.

Alberta's irrigation districts are increasingly challenged by excessive vegetation growth in irrigation canals. Such growth can result in impairment of timely and adequate water conveyance. Overgrowth of aquatic vegetation is caused in part by an abundance of dissolved nutrients. This technical report communicates possible sources and fates of these nutrients in irrigation water and suggests mitigative actions.

Environmental Impact Assessment and associated applications pertaining to the proposed St. Mary Irrigation District Chin Reservoir Expansion Project. Chin Reservoir is an off-stream storage reservoir that is located roughly in the middle of St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) irrigation network, approximately 30 kilometers (km) east of Lethbridge and 15 km south of Taber. The Chin Reservoir Expansion Project (the Project) involves the construction of a new dam which would result in a larger reservoir. The new dam would be approximately 40 meters (m) in height and is expected to inundate (flood) approximately 650 hectares (ha) of privately held land within Chin Coulee. The technical report summarizes temporal trends occurring for select water quality parameters within a 15-year dataset of water quality information collected during the Irrigation District Water Quality program. Temporal trends at the regional and sample site scale were conducted to determine overall change in water quality parameters and identify possible areas of concern. This information is critical for enabling the agriculture and irrigation sectors to be proactive in addressing environmental concerns, food safety and demonstrating stewardship of Alberta’s land and water resources.

The progress reports offer information regarding the work accomplished or the barriers encountered in implementing the the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan and highlight the status of all the strategic commitments made in the plan. The reports meet the legislative requirements described in the Alberta Land Stewardship Act and the regulatory requirements embedded in the plan. They also fulfill a public commitment to regularly monitor and answer the question "was progress made toward achieving desired regional objectives expressed within the approved regional plans?"
