The Safe Beach Protocol was prepared to provide Albertans with a clear understanding of the management of recreational waters in the province. It provides information on the role of owners and operators in overseeing these sites, monitoring water quality and responding to health risks, with the support and commitment of provincial agencies. The information in this document may be of interest to policy makers, researchers, public health professionals, or members of the public who are interested in recreational water sites (beaches).

Description

This report presents the monthly water quality results for the Old Fort monitoring station, Athabasca River, Alberta for 2014. These data are provided to fulfill reporting requirements mandated by the Surface Water Quality Management Framework, which supports the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. The 2014 report is the first report produced by the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency for the Lower Athabasca Region. Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development produced previous reports.

The intent of this pilot study on Rose and Strawberry creeks and the Blindman River was to scope out the feasibility of adding sediment and non-fish biota to the AESA water quality monitoring and to make a preliminary evaluation of the data. Collection of field data, invertebrate samples (kick nets), epilithic algae and sediment quality sampling in the three streams was practical. Benthic invertebrate and epilithic algal communities were diverse and abundant and offer good potential for future monitoring, along with water and sediment chemistry. Defining reference conditions ecoregionally would be important in future aquatic ecosystem health monitoring and data interpretation.

Description

This manual describes the use of a package of two tools developed for Alberta Environment by Golder Associates Ltd: Load Screening Tool; and Effluent Statistics Tool. The tools have been developed in Microsoft Excel 2002 and are compatible with Excel 2000 but not necessarily with previous versions. The tools are intended to facilitate screening of effluents for compliance with surface water quality objectives and computation of water quality based effluent limits based on the characteristics of the effluent discharge and receiving water.

This report presents the results of 1986-88 Bow River water quality monitoring programs conducted by Alberta Environment. Plant nutrient, coliform bacteria count and aquatic plant biomass trends and differences between sites were analyzed. This program was mainly designed to detect changes in river water quality since the installation of phosphorus removal at Calgary sewage treatment plants in 1982-83.

Pulp mills discharge significant amounts of wastewater which have the potential to affect water quality in receiving waters. The Alberta-Pacific Environmental Impact Assessment Review Board has been established to examine the potential water quality impacts of pulp mills in the Peace and Athabasca River systems. Alberta Environment has monitored water quality in these rivers for a number of years and has carried out assessments of the impact of existing pulp mill effluents on river water quality and aquatic biota. It is the purpose of this document to outline the monitoring done to date, to summarize the findings of these assessments regarding pulp mill effects, and to indicate the direction of future river monitoring and assessments.
