Description

This report presents median and 90th percentile (peak) concentrations calculated from monthly water quality samples at Long-Term River Network stations across the South Saskatchewan River Basin. The results of the report address whether there is a significant change in water quality parameters from historical concentrations, and whether there were any exceedances of limits as defined in the South Saskatchewan Region Surface Water Quality Management Framework. The data provided in this report fulfills the reporting requirements mandated by the Framework, which supports the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. This publication informs appropriate management responses where necessary and provides reporting of ambient conditions to the Alberta public.

The Wabasca Lake Monitoring Pilot Project is part of the Indigenous Lake Monitoring Program of Alberta’s provincial Lake Monitoring Program. The project was initiated in response to community interest in water quality and concern for fish health, and was carried out in collaboration with the Lands Department of Bigstone Cree Nation and Alberta Environment and Parks. The goals of the project were to address gaps in water quality knowledge and information for North Wabasca Lake, and provide aquatic monitoring training in scientific sampling methodology to Bigstone Cree Nation.

The workshop outcomes include a number of recommended changes to monitoring network design.

Reports on the development of an integrated modelling framework established and implemented from April 2012 to March 2015, to provide a comprehensive understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, sediments, and contaminants within the Athabasca River and to inform current and future monitoring efforts. The broad objective of this part of the Joint Oil Sands Monitoring plan was to provide critical knowledge on and improved predictive modelling capability for water availability and sediment/contaminant transport in the lower Athabasca River.

The report presents results of a water quality monitoring program completed on the Athabasca River. During the winter of 2015, Alberta Environment and Parks conducted a synoptic survey on the Athabasca River. The purpose of the study was threefold: to evaluate winter spatial patterns in water quality along the length of the Athabasca River; to assess the cumulative effects of industrial and municipal point-source discharges on the Athabasca River during winter low flow, while considering contributions from major tributaries; and to compare current water quality conditions in the Athabasca River to data collected in 1990-1993. A synoptic survey is a comprehensive spatial survey that aims to sample the same ‘parcel’ of water as it flows downstream in a river basin.
