Description

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for arsenic. Arsenic and its compounds are used in a number of applications and industrial processes. Chrome copper arsenate is used as a wood preservative. Other uses of arsenic and its compounds include the manufacturing of glass, metallurgy, the manufacturing of gallium arsenide for the electronics industry and some medical applications. In Alberta, the power and electrical utilities sector as well as the wood industry (wood preserving) contribute to arsenic emissions.

The review was conducted to support the development of a new air monitoring strategic plan for Alberta, and considered factors such as existing air monitoring in Alberta and future air emission scenarios.

Currently there is no standard method for field measurement and estimation of dry deposition of acidifying pollutants in Alberta. Alberta Environment is pursuing development of an inexpensive standard method. This may involve a combination of continuous, intermittent, and/or passive field measurements of acidifying pollutants and using inference methods for estimating sulphur and nitrogen species dry deposition. An overall objective of this study was to continue evaluating inferential methods for estimating dry deposition rates.

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for manganese. Manganese may be found in over 100 minerals, primarily in the form of oxides, silicates and carbonates. It is also found in coal and crude oil. Manganese is used primarily in making steels and nonferrous alloys. Other uses for manganese and manganese compounds include in the manufacturing of batteries, fertilizers, pesticides and ceramics, as a gasoline additive and as a dietary supplement. Manganese compounds are also used in animal feeds, pharmaceutical products, and wood preservatives and as catalysts.

Metallic nickel is not commonly found in nature but nickel is found in many minerals. Nickel is used primarily in the manufacturing of stainless steel and other alloys due to its favourable properties of hardness, corrosion-resistance, heat-resistance and strength.

Benzo[a]pyrene is the most well known polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in a large group of organic compounds with two or more fused aromatic rings. PAHs are formed mainly as a result of incomplete combustion of organic materials during industrial and other human activities. These activities include processing of coal and crude oil, combustion of natural gas, combustion of refuse, vehicle traffic, cooking and tobacco smoking, as well as natural processes such as forest fires. Motor vehicle exhaust and re-suspension are major contributors of PAHs, including benzo[a]pyrene, to urban air. PAHs in urban air have also been associated with residential wood burning emissions.
