The willow leafminer (Micruapteryx salcifoliella) is a small gray moth native to North America. The caterpillars of this moth feed on willow leaves periodically causing extensive damage to willow stands in the province. In 2011, an inter-provincial outbreak of this insect damaged vast tracks of willow stands in Alberta. This brochure provides more information on the insect and how to recognize and control the damage caused by the caterpillar.

In response to stakeholder concerns of a decline in the quality and quantity of trophy rams available in some areas, SRD has completed an assessment of 35 years of trophy sheep registration and aerial survey data for bighorn sheep. The assessment indicates the harvest levels need to be adjusted to bring them into line with the management guidelines in the Management Plan for Bighorn Sheep in Alberta 1992. There are no immediate regulation changes planned, but we clearly need to work with provincial hunters and the outfitter/guides to achieve a better balance with our objectives.

This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining current distribution and breeding populations of the butterfly in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

Wind farms have an effect on the landscape, are a cause of bird and bat mortality, and can also result in wildlife disturbance and habitat degradation. Wind energy projects, like other development projects with potential environmental impact, need to be well planned in order to avoid or mitigate these impacts. This document summarizes potential wildlife issues associated with new wind energy developments in Alberta, and provides guidelines for minimizing impacts of such projects on wildlife.
