Alberta's irrigation districts are increasingly challenged by excessive vegetation growth in irrigation canals. Such growth can result in impairment of timely and adequate water conveyance. Overgrowth of aquatic vegetation is caused in part by an abundance of dissolved nutrients. This technical report communicates possible sources and fates of these nutrients in irrigation water and suggests mitigative actions.

Biomonitoring provides a measure of internal doses of environmental chemicals or agents and allows for a more accurate measure of human health risk from these exposures. In these Alberta Biomonitoring Program datasets, information was collected as part of 3 province-wide studies investigating the serum levels of environmental chemicals (both natural and synthetic) in pregnant women in northern, central and southern Alberta (Phase 1), in children in southern Alberta (Phase 2), and maternal and umbilical cord blood samples from 7 Alberta cities (Phase 3). The goals of the program are to create a benchmark against which to track future exposures, provide a starting point for assessing health risks, indicate possible exposure sources and prioritize research efforts. Chemicals targeted for monitoring were selected using expert guidance and review of similar studies. The technical report summarizes temporal trends occurring for select water quality parameters within a 15-year dataset of water quality information collected during the Irrigation District Water Quality program. Temporal trends at the regional and sample site scale were conducted to determine overall change in water quality parameters and identify possible areas of concern. This information is critical for enabling the agriculture and irrigation sectors to be proactive in addressing environmental concerns, food safety and demonstrating stewardship of Alberta’s land and water resources.

The annual Irrigation Rehabilitation Program Status Report summarizes the expenditures and status of all IRP projects that were active during the construction period of August 1st to July 31st of a given year. The IRP began in 1969 and is a cost shared program between Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and Alberta’s 13 irrigation districts. Since 1969 funding levels have varied between $600,000 and $33,400,000.

Under the Post-Secondary Learning Act, the boards of all public post-secondary institutions and independent academic institutions must enter into an investment management agreement with the Minister of Advanced Education. These agreements must include the mandate of the institution, performance metrics for the institution, and anything else determined by the Minister. The agreements are the primary accountability instrument of a performance-based funding model for Alberta's post-secondary system and incentivize institutions to work collectively to achieve the goals of Alberta 2030. This record contains all signed investment management agreements for the period 2022-2025.

Stripe rust (also known as yellow rust) caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis, has devastated cereal production worldwide due to rapid systemic infection of affected plants resulting in defoliation and shrived kernels. This is primarily a disease of cool climates and has been found in southern Alberta and British Columbia for many years. Recently, stripe rust prevalence has increased in central Alberta in wheat, barley and triticale. This fact sheet contains information on the cause and cycle of this damaging crop disease, as well as control methods.

This information is used by the agriculture and irrigation industry to be proactive in addressing environmental concerns and management of Alberta's land and water resources.
