Description

This report represents a synthesis of the available information on the special and representative features of Richardson River Dunes Wildland Provincial Park (RRD). It is largely based on a number of reports and documents that were prepared as a result of field studies conducted during June and August of 2000. These reports and documents are listed in the Bibliography section of this report and will be available on the website of the Alberta Natural Heritage Information Centre or through the offices of the Parks and Protected Areas Division. Richardson River Dunes Wildland Provincial Park was established on 18 March 1998 by Order-in-Council (#105/98). Most of the park is currently mapped as occurring within the Central Mixedwood Subregion of the Boreal Forest Natural Region. However, the landscapes and features of the park are more representative of and have more affinities to the Athabasca Plain Subregion of the Canadian Shield Natural Region. Description

Richardson River Dunes Wildland Provincial Park is situated in townships 104 and 105, ranges 6 to 9, west of the 4th meridian. The Athabasca River forms the western park boundary and the eastern boundary is relatively close to the Richardson River. This park is located predominantly within in the Central Mixedwood Natural Subregion with the southern edge dipping into the Athabasca Plain Natural Subregion and the extreme northwestern corner of the park along the Athabasca River transitional to the Peace River Lowlands Natural Subregion. The terrain in this park consists primarily of stabilized sand dunes oriented in a northwest- southeast direction. Currently no active dunes exist in this area; however, some blowout areas are present. The predominant vegetation pattern represented on this landscape consists of pine woodlands on the upper slopes of the dunes with wetlands situated between the dunes, in the dune hollows. Field surveys of the mammal fauna of Marguerite River Crag and Tail, Maybelle River and Richardson River Dunes Wildland Provincial Parks and surrounding area were conducted from June 12 - 24 and from August 22 - 25, 2000. A literature search suggested that 44 mammalian species could be expected to inhabit the three wildland provincial parks. Small mammal trapping, direct observations, tracks, animal calls or other sounds, structures and scats of mammal species yielded 29 species. Fur trapping records show five additional species in the study area. The additional ten expected species were not detected during the field survey. The observation of one grizzly bear in the Marguerite Crag and Tail Wildland Provincial Park was definitely the highlight of mammalian observations during the field survey in this area. Description

From June 12-23 (inclusive) 2000, preliminary bird inventories were conducted for three, newly established Wildland Provincial Parks (WPPs) located in the Central Mixedwood (Boreal Forest) and Athabasca Plain (Canadian Shield) Sub-Regions of northeast Alberta. These parks, and the total number of bird species documented within them (to date) are: Marguerite Crag and Tail WPP (61); Maybelle River WPP (85), and Richardson River Dunes WPP (64). A composite bird checklist was compiled for the study area as a whole. It comprises species (representing 31 families) of which 16 (13.8%) are considered residents and the remainder, summer residents. Of the latter 100 species, 26 are short-distance migrants and 74 are Neotropical Migrants (NTMs; split equally between Obligate and Facultative NTMs). From a conservation perspective, it is noteworthy that almost two-thirds (63.8%) of the study area bird list is comprised of NTMs.
