Description

The purpose of this study was to assess the current distribution and abundance of eight disjunct butterfly populations that are closely associated with the native grasslands of the Peace River Parkland natural sub-region of northwestern Alberta and to make recommendations for further monitoring and management. All of the butterfly populations surveyed have very narrow geographic ranges and specific habitat requirements making them particularly susceptible to habitat loss.

Description

Populations of the loggerhead shrike have declined markedly in many areas of North America in recent years. In Alberta, the species is now absent from much of the central aspen parkland, and is considered to be a Species of Special Concern in the province. In the central areas of the province, populations are now so low and sparsely distributed that monitoring techniques used in other areas of the province are not effective. In 2000 and 2001, an intensive search for loggerhead shrikes was conducted along the southern boundary of the central aspen parkland to help define the status and breeding locations of the species in this area. Shrikes were found at 61 unique locations over the two years.

Description

Due to the widespread use and environmental accumulation of pesticide residues, the peregrine falcon population declined throughout North America during the 1950s and 1960s. Populations of the falcon improved following the ban of DDT in Canada in 1969 and efforts to protect the species. As a result of the population increase, the species was down-listed from Endangered to Threatened in Alberta in 2000. The Parkland Region of Alberta supports a large percentage of the provincial population. Monitoring of the falcon population was conducted in the summer of 2000 and again in the summer of 2001. The results of the 2001 survey are discussed in this report.
