Description

This surveillance report presents emergency department, prescription, and mortality data associated with fentanyl, other opioids and other substances of misuse in Alberta. Results are subject to change based on differences in reporting schedules and updates from the various data systems. The surveillance report was replaced by the Alberta Surveillance Substance Use System in December 2020.

This surveillance report presents emergency department visits, hospitalizations, prescription drug dispensing from community pharmacies, emergency medical services, naloxone kit dispensing, supervised consumption service visits, and mortality data associated with opioids and other drugs in Alberta. The time period covered in this report is January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018.

Alberta Health undertook a review of the Chief Medical Examiner's case files on all unintentional opioid-related deaths in 2017, supplemented by administrative data from Alberta Health. The purpose of the review was to learn more about the people dying from opioid-related deaths and the circumstances of those deaths, and to identify trends and inform potential interventions to help stem the increasing number of opioid-related deaths in Alberta.
