The goal of the resource is to provide information and strategies that schools can use to create welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments to support the resilience and well-being of students and staff after a natural disaster. The information and strategies described in the resource focus on psychological recovery, "the process of facilitating resilience within individuals, families and communities exposed to disasters".

Le but de cette ressource est de fournir de l’information et des stratégies que les écoles peuvent utiliser pour créer des environnements d’apprentissage accueillants, bienveillants, respectueux et sécuritaires afin de soutenir la résilience et le bienêtre des élèves et du personnel à la suite d’une catastrophe naturelle. Bien que cette ressource soit spécialement conçue pour favoriser le rétablissement après une catastrophe naturelle, une grande partie de l’information et bon nombre de stratégies peuvent être applicables à la planification et à l’intervention lors d’autres types de catastrophes ou de situations d’urgence.

In June 2013, large areas of Southern Alberta experienced a deluge of heavy rainfall that caused disastrous levels of flooding. The scale and impacts of the flooding are unprecedented in Alberta, and resulted in the first ever State of Provincial Emergency to be declared in Canadian history. During the height of the events, and the first few days after June 20, 2013, there were 29 local states of emergency declared in the province.
