Description

This report presents a summary of current water quality conditions in Gull Lake and includes a preliminary assessment of water quality in the main inflowing tributaries. Levels of total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a in Gull Lake have not increased significantly since monitoring began thirty years ago, nor has the general mineral content of the lake changed.

Description

Since 1983, treated sewage effluent from the Town of Lac La Biche has discharged to Field Lake, a small shallow eutrophic lake south of the town. The lake outflow, called Red Deer Brook, flows into Lac La Biche. In 1997, Alberta Environment recognized that there was little information on the water quality of Red Deer Brook, especially with respect to spawning of Northern Pike in spring. In 1998, Alberta Environment began a spring sampling program to answer some of the questions raised by department staff and officials of the Town of Lac La Biche. The main question was whether Red Deer Brook has been adversely affected by outflow from Field Lake. The focus of the study was on nutrients, ammonia-nitrogen and dissolved oxygen, all of which could directly or indirectly affect fish spawning in the lower portions of the creek.

Natural Resources Service of Alberta Environment has monitored the water quality of Sylvan Lake each year since 1983, except for 1991 and 1998. This long period of record provides an excellent database from which to determine whether water quality in the lake is changing. Staff of Sylvan Lake/Jarvis Bay Provincial Park collect the samples, Monitoring Branch processes them, and Water Sciences Branch interprets the data. This brief report updates information sent to Alberta Parks in 1996.

Lac Ste. Anne and Lake Isle are popular recreational lakes situated west of Edmonton. In 1999 a group of citizens formed the Lac Ste. Anne and Lake Isle Water Quality Management Society. Alberta Environmental Protection agreed to conducted a diagnostic study to determine causes of water quality problems in these lakes and what might be done to preserve them. Key to improving water quality is reducing the external supply of nutrients. This report documents the results of the study.

Increasing development pressure at Wizard Lake prompted the counties of Leduc and Wetaskiwin to review the lake management plan that was adopted in 1980. One of the main issues relevant to further development is water quality of the lake. The planning committee members asked Alberta Environmental Protection to provide updated information on the lake’s water quality, particularly whether it had changed over the years. This report summarizes available data and updates a phosphorus budget that had been prepared for the lake several years ago.

In 1992, Water Sciences Branch began an intensive study of Thunder Lake to determine the cause of increasing algal growth and poor water quality. Of particular interest was a diversion to the lake from a tributary of the Paddle River, which was suspected of increasing the lake’s supply of phosphorus and nitrogen. The purpose of the monitoring program was to assess 1) changes in water quality in the lake, 2) the quantity of phosphorus and nitrogen in the diversion water compared with other nutrient sources, 3) what the lake would be like if the diversion is discontinued, 4) other ways to maintain water quality in Thunder Lake. This report highlights the results of this study.

This report summarizes the information gathered on the water quality of Field Lake during the initial period of study (1981 - 1986) and from three sets of samples collected during the summer of 1997. The impact of the effluent discharge is assessed by comparing 1) water quality two years before and four years after the discharge began, 2) concentrations of substances in the lake water with relevant Alberta and Canadian water quality guidelines, and 3) 1985-86 data with 1997 data.

Water quality in the North Saskatchewan River is monitored for the Prairie Provinces Water Board (PPWB) at the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Occasional exceedences of PPWB objectives for copper, fecal coliform bacteria, zinc and lead prompted an investigation into sources that may contribute to these high concentrations. Historical water quality data are available for point sources and the river in the urban area, but little is known about the contribution of the creeks and point sources discharging to the river along the last 100 km of river before it reaches the border.

In particular, lake bottom sediments in the area of the intake and elsewhere were sampled to determine whether excessive organic material in the sediments was contributing to water quality problems in the water supply and whether water quality might be improved by relocating the intake.
