In June 2015, Premier Rachel Notley announced that the Alberta Mental Health Review Committee would complete a comprehensive review of the mental health system in Alberta. The Committee released Valuing Mental Health: Report of the Alberta Mental Health Review Committee in February 2016. With guidance from stakeholder consultations and community suggestions, the Committee’s recommendations were synthesized into the 18 actions reflected in Valuing Mental Health (VMH): Next Steps, released in June 2017. VMH: Next Steps aligns with the Government of Alberta's community-based health vision by improving continuity of addiction and mental health services and supports within the health system and in the community. Its actions focus on coordinating and integrating services across health and with community service providers with an emphasis on meeting the needs of vulnerable and underserved groups.

Given the important relationship between positive mental health and academic success, schools have an important role in nurturing students' positive mental health and well-being. The goal of this resource is to help build a shared understanding of how schools, community partners and government can better work together to support mental health, to ensure that every student in Alberta has the learning opportunities and supports they need to develop positive mental health, be an engaged and successful learner and reach their full potential. Includes an information tool at the end to guide work around developing a mental health strategy.

Description

Alberta Health and Wellness and Alberta Health Services have developed a mental health strategy to guide actions to improve the health and mental well-being of Albertans in all areas of the province. The ultimate goal is to reduce the prevalence of addiction, mental health problems and mental illness in Alberta through health promotion and prevention activities and to provide quality assessment, treatment and support services to Albertans when they need them. To achieve these goals, the strategy outlines actions to be taken in five key areas: building health and resilient communities; fostering the development of healthy children, youth and families; enhancing community-based services, capacity and supports; addressing complex needs; and enhancing assurance in the Alberta mental health care system.
