Paleolimnology is the study of lake development through analysis of physical, chemical and biological information stored in aquatic sediments. Paleolimnology has multiple applications, lake management being one of them. The main objective of this report was to produce a summary of paleolimnological studies completed in Alberta.

Description

In 2002 Alberta Environment (AENV) initiated several studies (including this one) in response to complaints about murky water in the lake near the TransAlta Utilities Corporation (TAU) ash lagoon outfall and in support of an investigation on fish mortality. The specific objectives of this study were to document surficial sediment quality of Wabamun Lake with respect to metals and trace organics and to compare results with those from other lakes.

To learn more about sediment and water quality in Wabamun Lake and how it compares to other area lakes, Alberta Environment started several comprehensive studies of the lake in the summer of 2002, including assessments of differences in water quality across the lake, metals and trace organic contaminants in sediments, the significance of sediment quality to aquatic biota and the occurrence of disinfection by-products from the Wabamun Lake Water Treatment Plant. Additionally, a report summarizing the 20-year history of water quality of Wabamun Lake hasbeen compiled to provide a historical perspective on water quality of the lake.

Description

Total dissolved solids, conductivity and major ions have increased over time in Muriel Lake and that increase is linked to the drop in lake levels and the concentration of dissolved substances in the water. The salinity of the Muriel Lake has increased, although it still qualifies as a slightly saline water body. Phosphorus and chlorophyll a have increased slightly, but the database is insufficient to determine whether these changes are related to the decline in water levels or simply reflective of year-to-year variability. The lake has remained mesotrophic. Low winter dissolved oxygen levels, recorded under ice in recent years, are a concern for fisheries in Muriel Lake.

This report serves three main purposes. Firstly, it provides a refined representation of the sensitivity of Alberta lakes to acidifying atmospheric deposition. Secondly, it compiles data from a number of different surveys of northern lakes; spatial and temporal trends for these potentially sensitive lakes are described. Thirdly, this report documents and evaluates some of the chemical analyses used, providing a foundation for future work.
