Description

La Butte Creek Wildland Provincial park is one of 81 recently designated protected areas, established in March 1998. It is located in the northeast corner of Alberta, north of Lake Athabasca, about 300 km north of Ft. McMurray. The two main objectives of this reconnaissance survey were to: document the location, habitat and population size information for tracked vascular plant taxa occurring within the study area; and develop a preliminary list of vascular plant species for LBCWPP.

Description

During 2001 and 2002 a project to collect and identify the macrofungi of La Butte Creek, Fidler-Greywillow and Colin-Cornwall Lakes Wildland Provincial Parks, in northeastern Alberta was undertaken. This project was part of a greater biophysical investigation carried out by Parks and Protected Areas’ staff, and volunteers from a variety of scientific backgrounds. The fungi found belong to three major groups; the Ascomycota (cup fungi), Basidiomycota (mushrooms, rusts, smuts, etc.) and Myxomycota (slime molds). One hundred of the 156 species documented through this study have been previously recorded as occurring in Alberta. Valid Alberta records have yet to be found for the remaining 56 species. Also two species discovered (Gloeophyllum abietinum and Myriosclerotinia caricicampullaceae) are reportedly rare in North America.

In Alberta, the Canadian Shield Ecoregion is restricted to the extreme northeast part of the province (Strong and Leggat 1992). It is subdivided into the Kazan Upland Subregion and the Athabasca Plain Subregion, located to the north and south of Lake Athabasca, respectively. There are several wildland parks that have recently been established in these two subregions. An odonate survey was conducted in the summer of 2000 (Hornung) within three of the wildland parks that are located in the Athabasca Plain Subregion, namely Maybelle River, Marguerite River and Richardson River Dunes. This survey was the first for these three parks. Two parks located in the Kazan Upland Subregion were the focus for an odonate survey in the summer of 2001, namely La Butte Creek and Fildler-Greywillow Wildland Parks. In July 2001 La Butte Creek Wildland Provincial Park (LBCWPP) was surveyed to document small patch plant communities. Small patch plant communities add considerably to the diversity of a site, harbouring flora and potentially fauna dependent on these specialized habitats. They are however often overlooked in vegetation studies because they are not extensive or common enough to be considered representative. The focus of this study was to look within the matrix of the representative plant communities (surveyed and documented by the Ecological Land Classification team) to find and document the small patch communities that may be significant in a provincial context. This work was also significant as there were no previous studies documenting vegetation of this remote area. LBCWPP is located in the northeast corner of Alberta, a remote site accessible in summer only by air or water.
