Description

In October 2020, Alberta and Canada signed the Agreement for the Conservation and Recovery of the Woodland Caribou in Alberta to facilitate woodland caribou recovery in Alberta. Alberta is committed to the implementation of this Agreement which supports provincial caribou recovery efforts including landscape-level planning, habitat conservation, management and recovery planning, caribou mortality and population management and caribou population and habitat monitoring. Alberta and Canada agreed to regularly report on the progress towards the commitments in this Agreement. These reports provide summaries of progress made and actions undertaken.

To enable the prioritization of management activities in the Grassland Natural Region (GNR) of Alberta, a multi-species conservation value (MCV) model was created for 14 priority wildlife species using existing resource selection function and habitat suitability index models developed by MULTISAR. The MCV model is an index that incorporates habitat value, conservation status designations, distribution and habitat patch size for each of the 14 priority wildlife species within the GNR. Areas with "very high" MCV scores have more high-quality habitat, more priority species, priority species with higher conservation status, and/or priority species with more restricted ranges. Areas with "low" MCV scores have relatively low habitat value, fewer priority species, species with lower conservation statuses, and/or more wide-ranging species. The long-billed curlew is the largest member of the sandpiper family and is distinguishable by its long downward curved bill and large size. It has been designated a Species of Special Concern in Alberta and Canada due to the contraction of its range and small, possibly declining, population. Habitat alteration is the primary threat to this species. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining the current distribution and population of long-billed curlew in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

MULTISAR is a program focused on multi-species conservation at the landscape level that promotes stewardship through voluntary participation of landholders on both Crown and private lands. The program is a collaborative effort among landholders, Alberta Conservation Association, Alberta Environment and Parks, and the Prairie Conservation Forum. The primary goals of MULTISAR are to implement collaborative strategies to manage multiple species on a defined working landscape and to assist with their implementation. This report summarizes MULTISAR's accomplishments in 2016-2017 in its three primary program areas; habitat conservation strategies; education, outreach and awareness; and research, monitoring, and evaluation.
