MULTISAR: multi-species conservation value modelling within the Grasslands Natural Region of Alberta

Description

To enable the prioritization of management activities in the Grassland Natural Region (GNR) of Alberta, a multi-species conservation value (MCV) model was created for 14 priority wildlife species using existing resource selection function and habitat suitability index models developed by MULTISAR. The MCV model is an index that incorporates habitat value, conservation status designations, distribution and habitat patch size for each of the 14 priority wildlife species within the GNR. Areas with "very high" MCV scores have more high-quality habitat, more priority species, priority species with higher conservation status, and/or priority species with more restricted ranges. Areas with "low" MCV scores have relatively low habitat value, fewer priority species, species with lower conservation statuses, and/or more wide-ranging species. An MCV map was produced to identify areas with high multi-species value for conservation and management and may be used to guide the application of stewardship activities within the GNR.
