Description

In an attempt to evaluate the ecological function of forested rangelands, the forested range health assessment protocol was developed. The protocol measures a number of key vegetation and soil parameters in order to estimate forested range health. Although certain soil parameters are indirectly assessed through measurements of LFH, there is limited knowledge about how these metrics relate to soil ecosystem health and the structure and composition of soil mesofaunal communities. In this study, the relationships between different range health gradients and soil mesofauna were evaluated.

Objectives of the study were: To protect surface water and allow for vegetative recovery and bank stabilization, improving water quality and habitat for fish and wildlife species by temporarily fencing livestock out of Campbell Creek and developing two alternate off-site watering facilities; To improve water quality for livestock leading to increased weight gains and increased subsequent financial returns for the seven Campbell Creek Grazing Association members and their families; To demonstrate good riparian grazing management practices.

Description

This project involved the use of ten GPS collars to monitor cattle grazing behaviour and habitat use across a diverse mosaic of forested and non-forested range plant community types including regenerating aspen forest. Cattle use of all native plant community types was secondary to tame forages, including aspen cutblocks. If there are other community types available that are preferred above regenerating deciduous communities cattle are unlikely to use cutblock areas until forage is depleted in the preferred community types, unless cutblocks are in close proximity to preferred communities and/or unless prompted to do so with livestock distribution tools.

However, there is limited information on their ecology and succession under the influence of livestock grazing. This guide provides a framework that can be used to easily group the vegetative community types. It is hoped the classification systems presented can be used to assess the ecology of the sites and develop integrated management plans within each region. This edition is a revision of the 5th approximation of the Range Plant Community Types and Carrying Capacity for the Dry and Central Mixedwood.
