Fall index netting (FIN) is conducted each year during late summer and fall on selected Alberta lakes to monitor walleye and Northern pike populations. The abundance of adult fish as determined by the netting is used to help determine the risk to the sustainability of the fish population in a lake. This report presents the results of netting conducted in 2022 on Gull Lake .

Description

This paper describes a surface collection from the Gull Lake site near Fort Vermilion in northern Alberta. The site yielded an assortment of tools, including a complete microblade core, several diagnostic projectile points made from a variety of lithic raw materials (including one specimen resembling Angostura Paleoindian points). We hypothesize that the Gull Lake site represents one of several areas in the northern Alberta Boreal Borest that were prairies purposely maintained by First Nations peoples to attract large game animals such as woodland bison. Once these and other large animals were depleted after contact, First Nations peoples no longer used the site in favor of other still productive game animal areas in northern Alberta.

This report documents the assessment of the performance of the GIS-based method used to evaluate the intactness of riparian habitats along the shorelines of Pigeon, Gull, Sylvan, and Buffalo lakes and their associated tributaries. Both desktop and field validation methods were used and the ability of the GIS assessment approach to capture relative differences in intactness locally and regionally was tested. Overall the method proved to be reliable for assessing and comparing the intactness of riparian management areas across large geographical areas.

The report documents the GIS-based method developed to assess the current condition of riparian habitats along the shorelines of Pigeon, Buffalo, Gull, and Sylvan lakes and their associated tributaries. The results of the riparian and land cover assessment are summarized and visualized, including a summary of habitat change within riparian management areas through time. Includes documentation of the GIS modelling and analysis methods including recommendations for minimum data standards and validation procedures.
