Description

Flood maps are created by combining hydraulic model results with high-accuracy ground information. Field surveys and LiDAR remote sensing are used to collect river and floodplain elevations, channel cross section data, bridge and culvert information, and flood berm details. A hydrology assessment using recorded and historic flow measurements is typically used to estimate river flows for a wide range of possible open water floods with different chances of occurring each year. When appropriate, an ice jam frequency analysis is undertaken. All this information is used to build a hydraulic model of a river system, which is calibrated using highwater marks and aerial imagery from past floods to ensure that results for the different flood flows being mapped are reasonable. Flood inundation maps show areas at risk for different sized floods, including ice jam floods in some communities. Flood hazard studies and mapping have been produced by the Government of Alberta since the 1970s. Initially there was no formal program associated with this work. In most cases, studies and mapping were provided to communities for information and planning purposes. The Canada-Alberta Flood Damage Reduction Program was initiated in 1989 between the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada. The program was created to standardize and cost-share production of flood hazard studies and mapping, in order to increase public safety and awareness of flood hazards with an ultimate goal to mitigate flood damages. The program expired in 1999 before flood hazard studies and mapping were completed for all of the original candidate communities. AEP continues to produce studies and mapping under the separate and independent Flood Hazard Identification Program.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Red Deer, Little Red Deer and the Medicine Rivers through Red Deer County, including Markerville. The study area includes an approximate 50 km reach of the Red Deer River, an approximate 12 km reach of the Little Red Deer River and an approximate 17 km reach of the Medicine River. The Red Deer River design discharge ranges from 1450 m³/s at the upstream study extent to 1750 m³/s at the downstream extent. The design discharges for the Little Red Deer and Medicine Rivers are 419 m³/s and 283 m³/s respectively. The study was prepared in March 2007. This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Red Deer River, Michichi Creek and the Rosebud River through the Drumheller and surrounding area. The study area includes about 36 km of the Red Deer River and almost 2 km lengths of Michichi Creek and the Rosebud River upstream of their confluences with the Red Deer River. The Red Deer River design discharge ranges from 2290 m³/s at the upstream study extent to 2560 m³/s at the downstream extent. The design discharges for Michichi Creek and the Rosebud River are 68.0 m³/s and 276 m³/s respectively. The study was prepared in February 2007.
