Presents results of watershed assessments conducted in areas covered by the North Central Native Trout Recovery Program, which include the Kakwa River, Berland River, North Saskatchewan River, Clearwater River, and Upper Red Deer River watersheds. Watershed assessments provide information used to set appropriate fishing regulations, to understand and correct problems with fish habitat and to guard against invasive species.

Description

The lake sturgeon is a unique component of Alberta's wildlife and a prized sportfish. In Alberta, lake sturgeon are now confined to two areas: the North Saskatchewan and South Saskatchewan river systems. This project assessed the management utility of existing harvest data on species populations by means of a creel survey on the South Saskatchewan River conducted in the summer of 2000. The survey data were compared to data collected from an annual questionnaire sent to all holders of a sturgeon fishing licence.
