Description

In 2009, the Project Team, consisting of personnel from CH2M HILL, R.Alexander Associates, sonnevera international corp., and the University of Alberta, was retained to research and compile background information needed to finalize the L&YW Diversion Strategy. As part of this assignment, the Project Team was also asked to review the program recommendations put forward by L&YW Diversion Technical Committee. During the course of the project, a number of technical memoranda were prepared that focused on specific information requirements identified by the L&YW Technical Committee. These reports were subsequently updated based on additional information and comments provided by the Committee, and have been consolidated into this summary report.

This report briefly reviews and summarizes theoretical and observational relationships for determining the fraction of heat radiated from flares in proximity of a flame. Nine articles are reported in which the fraction of heat radiated in proximity of a flame is determined by theoretically-derived relationships. Two articles are reported in which the fraction of heat radiated in proximity of a flame is determined by empirically derived relationships.

This report presents the results of an investigation of slope stability along the South Saskatchewan River and its tributaries in the vicinity of Medicine Hat, Alberta. The objectives of the investigation were: - to identify and delineate areas along the river bank which have previously failed or are potentially unstable. - to identify failure modes and the geological factors effecting existing slope instability. - to evaluate the effect of development on or adjacent to the river valley. - to recommend a safe set-back distance from the valley walls where developments will not be effected by slope instability.

The highway will cause some adverse environmental effects which must be weighed against the objectives, goals and benefits accruing to the social and economic well being of the majority of Albertans.
