In 2014 Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development released Alberta's Irrigation: A Strategy For The Future. The document included five key strategies which together laid out the department's blueprint for the future of the irrigation industry in Alberta. In an effort to manage and measure each of these strategies, an annual measurement and reporting of results was implemented.

Alberta Forestry and Parks and the Alberta Energy Regulator manage the use of public lands for all Albertans through the issuance of dispositions. A disposition must be obtained under the Public Lands Act for any access to or activity on public lands and in compliance with the Public Lands Administration Regulation. The Master Schedule of Standards and Conditions (MSSC) identifies conditions that apply to formal disposition applications approved under the Public Lands Act. Conditions displayed in this document are part of multiple approval systems and processes. It is important for the users of the MSSC to also review and understand the information contained within the Pre-Application Requirements for Formal Dispositions document. It contains the headwaters of the Oldman River, supports biodiversity values, requires the management of wildlife risk and provides traditional First Nations land uses. The Government of Alberta aims to provide a diversity of outdoor recreation opportunities while recognizing that recreation occurs within a multiple use landscape with complex environmental, economic and social values.

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan establishes a long-term vision for the South Saskatchewan Region and aligns provincial policies at the regional level to balance Alberta's economic, environmental and social goals. The regional plan also includes strategies for responsible energy development, sustainable farming and ranching, recreation, forest management, and nature-based tourism. It has been established under the Alberta Land Stewardship Act, and the Land Use Framework. This version of the SSRP was amended in May 2018, and came into effect on May 31, 2018.
