The opportunity for generating emission offsets arises from the direct and indirect reduction in greenhouse gases resulting from the capture, transportation and injection and ultimate sequestration of CO2.

Agricultural activities, including the production of livestock, result in greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. Beef cattle, in particular, release methane (CH4) as a result of the digestion of feed materials in the rumen. These emissions are called enteric emissions and are a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities. Other emission sources for cattle include methane and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are generated from manure storage and handling within beef cattle operations. This protocol for reducing the number of days on feed for beef cattle addresses both digestion and manure storage and handling emission sources for livestock greenhouse gas emissions. It allows users to quantify greenhouse gas reductions using scientifically valid equations and emission factors resulting from a reduction in the number of days required to complete the finishing stage of beef cattle in a feedlot resulting in a decrease in both enteric and manure...

This quantification protocol is written for the project developer completing gravel and lightly surfaced road rehabilitation. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets arises from the direct and indirect reduction of greenhouse gases emissions by reducing the use of fossil-fuel derived energy during the rehabilitation of gravel and lightly-surfaced roads. Projects applying this protocol achieve fuel savings from the recycling of recovered, processed aggregate from the existing road bed, reducing the amount of aggregate and binder needing to be sourced, processed and transported to the project site.

Some familiarity with, or general understanding of, the operation of a wind electric facility, and associated practices, is expected. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arise from the quantification of reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the implementation of facilities that convert the energy in wind into electrical energy as the end product. These opportunities cover several technologies and will be referred to simply as “wind electric facilities” The protocol quantifies the emission reductions based on the generation of an equivalent quantity of electricity from fossil fuel based sources, either at grid-connected or off-grid facilities.

Description

This quantification protocol is applicable to the quantification of direct and indirect reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the implementation of waste heat recovery projects. The protocol quantifies the emission reductions from the avoidance of fossil fuel consumption resulting from the capture and utilization of heat that is currently being wasted. The waste heat may be transferred into the project site where it is utilized, or may be recovered and used within the project site. Project configurations where the waste heat is supplemented are also included.

This quantification protocol is written for those familiar with anaerobic digester projects. Some familiarity with, or general understanding of, the operation of these projects is expected. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arises primarily from the indirect reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from displacing fossil fuel based electricity, thermal energy or natural gas in gas transmission systems with the biogas from the anaerobic digestion of materials (primarily agricultural materials such as manure, silage, dead animal stocks, etc). There is a small opportunity to generate direct offsets from direct combustion or diversion of waste from landfills, if the full flexibility of the protocol is employed.
