This fact sheet is intended to provide producers and farm managers with information on how to reduce ammonia emissions from livestock housing and manure storage facilities. By reducing ammonia emissions, producers will maintain the quality of the environment, prevent losses of significant portions of nutrients and improve the health and safety of animals and workers. Although there is no direct relationship between ammonia emissions and odour, practices to reduce ammonia emissions can have a corresponding mitigating effect on odour generation.

Alberta has about 25 million acres of forage land (native and tame hay and pasture). As well, applying manure can increase forage productivity and reduce commercial fertilizer costs. Manure is a valuable nutrient source for forage crops as it contains all the major plant nutrients and a number of essential micronutrients. Manure may also enhance soil physical properties such as water infiltration rate and aggregate size and stability, leading to better tilth and improved yields.

Silo gas is formed by the natural fermentation of chopped silage shortly after it is placed in the silo. The nitrates present in silage crops are converted to nitrites through the fermentation process; they, in turn, react with the organic acids in the silage to form nitrous acid (HNO3). As the temperature of the silage increases during fermentation,the nitrous acid decomposes to form a mixture of oxides of nitrogen, which can include NO, NO2, nitrogen trioxide (N2O3), nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4), and other oxides in lesser amounts.
