This report provides benchmark data on greenhouse crop operations in Alberta as of 2019, including size and distribution of the industry, heating systems used, water and energy use trends, and labour. Also included is information on opportunities and issues related to financing, the environment, business climate and regulation, competitiveness with imports, and other benchmarks and future trends. Data for the report was gathered through a survey of greenhouse operators in winter 2019-2020, and updates information provided in earlier reports.

In 2014, the Economics Branch of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) in collaboration with the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association (AGGA) conducted a comprehensive survey to update the “Profile of the Greenhouse Industry in Alberta” 2010 report with 2014 data. The project was funded by Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The report provides current benchmark data on greenhouse crop operations in Alberta. This includes size, distribution in different regions within the province, heating systems, water and energy use trends, labour, as well as opportunities and issues related to financing, environment, business climate and regulation, competitiveness with imports, and other benchmarks and future trends.
