The Government of Alberta and industry partners commissioned a consultant to develop a conceptual design for an integrated bitumen upgrading, refining and petrochemical complex in Alberta. The study was designed to build on previous integration studies and goes one step further with the development of a technical design for a conceptual upgrading, refining and petrochemical complex based on current technologies.

A number of operators have been searching for solutions in the form of new pump developments or improvements to existing artificial lift systems to contend with the difficult operating enviroment associated with low pressure steam assisted gravity drainage (LP-SAGD). The objective of this project was to test a number of downhole pumping systems in a laboratory environment in order to prioritize and select candidates for further field trials.

Sponsored by the Alberta Department of Energy and by the Alberta Energy Research Institute, the purpose of this study is to document the intent and the level of effort for publicly-funded oil sands and heavy oil research. The first task of this study was to develop background information about publicly funded oil sands research and development in Alberta and Canada, whether it is conducted by government or academic institutions. The second task was to match research and development projects with the overall needs and challenges of the industry and to map them to major reservoir types.
