Presents the results of excavation and analysis of shallow impacted soils within the traffic area of the future Turner Valley gas plant interpretive centre. The Turner Valley gas plant, western Canada’s first natural gas processing and refining facility and the site of Alberta’s first major oil and gas discovery, is a provincial historic resource and a national historic site.

A site protection and remediation project for the The Turner Valley gas plant was completed in the Spring of 2007. This report presents the results of a study of the human health and ecological risk assessment for the Sheep River floodplain beyond the containment wall at the site. The Turner Valley gas plant, western Canada’s first natural gas processing and refining facility and the site of Alberta’s first major oil and gas discovery, is a provincial historic resource and a national historic site.

In February of 2009, Alberta Culture and Community Spirit undertook a strategic overview of cultural facilities across the province in order to ascertain the state of activity in cultural facilities planning, and to identify current trends and projects in development. To supplement this work, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, hosted a series of regional dialogues in June 2009 aimed at gathering information, understanding diverse perspectives and identifying community needs related to cultural infrastructure. Results from the dialogues will assist the department in developing a comprehensive plan for maintaining existing inventory in the province, while deploying resources for new facilities in a visionary and innovative fashion. A total of 162 individuals attended six dialogues, held in various regions of the province. Description

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a contract was designed to address three issues identified on the gas plant land: interior mercury vapors, exterior mercury concentrations in soil, and risks to health and the environment by aging underground storage tanks present throughout the site.
