The Way Forward is a comprehensive plan to advance the Indigenous Primary Health Care's Advisory Panel's recommendations, respecting diverse well-being definitions within Indigenous communities. The plan centres Indigenous voices, avoiding tokenistic practices, and adopting trauma-informed, person-centered perspectives and acknowledges the diverse health needs within Indigenous communities. It is committed to increasing life expectancy and overall health, involving community input and respecting cultural protocols while prioritizing culturally safe and holistic healthcare, honoring Indigenous expertise and traditions.

This is the final report of the Indigenous Primary Health Care Advisory Panel, which was established as part of the Modernization of Alberta's Primary Health Care System initiative to provide advice and recommendations to help transform Alberta's primary health care system in order to provide accessible, relevant and culturally safe primary health care for Indigenous peoples. It contains 22 overarching recommendations organized around five strategic outcomes of primary care: culturally safe and appropriate care, access, integration, quality, and Indigenous peoples as partners.

The Modernizing Alberta's Primary Health Care System initiative has been established to strengthen primary health care in Alberta and ensure all Albertans have access to timely, appropriate primary health care services. The Indigenous Advisory Panel was established to provide advice and recommendations to help transform the primary health care system in order to provide accessible, relevant, and culturally safe primary health care to First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. This report from the Panel provides an interim step toward building a long-term strategic road map for primary health care modernization for Indigenous peoples in Alberta.
