Description

The Riparian Area Assessment of the North Saskatchewan and Battle River Watersheds project focused on assessing riparian habitat along lake, creek, stream and river shorelines. The majority of the shorelines of interest were located within the NSR or Battle River watersheds. however, an additional shoreline was also assessed within municipalities that partially intersect, but are not completely contained within, either the NSR or Battle River watersheds. In addition to assessing new shorelines, an important component of this project was compiling data for shorelines that had been previously assessed in central Alberta using the same assessment methodology. these data were combined together to create a single, seamless riparian assessment dataset that contains ~35,400 km of lake, river, stream, and creek shoreline. This dataset was created for the North Saskatchewan and Battle River Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils, as a part of a large scale Riparian Area Assessment in Alberta.

The Provincial Bison Protection Areas dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Bison Protection Areas in Alberta. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation. All hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. All hunting (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) of wood bison within the Wabasca Bison Protection Area is prohibited. The research plots includes: the Alberta Permanent Sampling Program (PSP) which incorporates Alberta Forest Service (AFS) plots, Stand Dynamic Stands (SDS) and Forest Management Plots (FMB). Alberta Monitoring Plots (MP). Western Boreal Growth and Yield (WESBOGY) Plots, TAKI Pine Trial Plots, Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) Monitoring Plots. Duffy (DUF) Lake Plots. and miscellaneous research plots (RES) including range and genetic trial plots. All attempts to position the plot points as accurately as possible have been made however as many research programs are decades old the precision for points taken depends on the accuracy of the GPS unit (if any) used at the time, and if any differential correction was used.
