Description

Most health statistics have a geospatial component. In order for health measures developed or used by different organizations to be valid and comparable, the measures should reference the same geopolitical areas. This report outlines the methodologies employed by Alberta Health and Wellness in calculations of health measures within geopolitical boundaries, and compares these to methods used by Statistics Canada and other agencies. It includes an analysis of the differences in methodologies and the differences in health measures that these different agencies have created, and presents recommendations for changes to the manner in which health measures are calculated in the future. The report is part of a family of reports that illustrates and documents the geographic methods required to properly analyze health data in Alberta.

This publication provides information on the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan: how it is administered, the health services it covers, who it covers, and accessibility to the services it insures. It also discusses eligibility to the plan for those moving to Alberta, and portability of the plan for Albertans who move outside the province.

In September 2000, First Ministers in Canada agreed to provide clear accountability reporting to Canadians beginning in September 2002. Health ministers from the provinces, territories and the federal government worked to select and report to the public on a set of comparable health indicators. This report is the result of that work. The results presented in this report show that Albertans have similar health status compared with the Canadian average, and that wait times are also similar to the national average. The report also outlines areas where Alberta outperforms the national average, and some areas where Alberta’s results are below the Canadian average and could be improved.

This report summarizes the results of a community exposure and health effects assessment undertaken in Grande Prairie to assess the impact of airborne contaminants on the health of the population. The report describes the population and personal distribution of exposure to airborne chemicals and particulates in the city of Grande Prairie and surrounding region. Using a personal exposure model, the relative contribution of various exposure sources and pathways to airborne chemicals is estimated and associations between exposure to airborne chemicals and human health effects are described.

The HIV issues for the Aboriginal people are serious, adding to an already complex and long-standing array of health and social challenges that face Aboriginal people and their communities. The Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy presents a culturally-appropriate approach to the prevention of HIV and for the care and support of Aboriginal people with HIV/AIDS.

The Alberta Oil Sands Community Exposure and Health Effects Assessment Program was designed to assess exposure and associated health effects by direct measurement of personal exposure, direct measurement of biomarkers, and daily logs of a participant's activities. The study was modeled after the Total Exposure Assessment Method (TEAM) approach developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The TEAM approach is based on four fundamental characteristics: direct measurement of all routes of exposure (breathing, ingestion, and skin contact), direct measurement of biomarkers, daily logs of a participant’s activities, and a representative probability sample.

In 1994, the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board recommended that a study be done on the quality of the air in the community of Fort McMurray, and its potential impact on human health. Scientists worked with 300 volunteer participants to test their health, measure the quality of the air they breathed and test the air in Fort McMurray. This resource presents an overview of the findings of the study, which concluded that Fort McMurray residents are breathing good quality air and that ambient levels of airborne contaminants are low compared to provincial, national and international guidelines.

In this study, cow’s milk from farms which are potentially affected by polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) emissions from various industries in Ft. Saskatchewan, including the Dow Chemical EDC/VCM facility, were sampled and analyzed for PCDD/F. The results were compared with samples from reference farms as well as supermarket milk.
