Description

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. As part of the reclamation program, a groundwater containment and treatment system was constructed to contain and treat impacted groundwater. The objectives of the 2010 monitoring and sampling programs were to evaluate the groundwater quality at selected areas of the historical gas plant and the performance of the containment wall and treatment corridor.

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. The conservation planning presented in this report has been developed to mesh conservation priorities determined in the assessment of the buildings and equipment, together with the interpretive strategy. The plan establishes two distinct components for the site: a self-guided component, and a guided walking tour.

Presents the results of groundwater monitoring at the historic Turner Valley gas plant. The objective of this program was to improve the understanding of groundwater flow at the site and delineate the distribution of contaminants of concern along the boundaries of the site. The Turner Valley gas plant, western Canada’s first natural gas processing and refining facility and the site of Alberta’s first major oil and gas discovery, is a provincial historic resource and a national historic site.

The Turner Valley gas plant represents the commencement of the oil and natural gas industry and its material contributions to a prosperous Alberta. The Turner Valley Gas Plant Resolution Advisory Panel was announced in January 2006 to advise the Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation, and Culture as to the viability of the plant as a provincial historic resource and its potential for development as an historic site. The Panel’s recommendations include the recommendation that the Minister consider the Turner Valley gas plant as a viable historic site open to the public for tours, contingent on additional considerations outlined in this report.

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. A reclamation program was implemented for the redevelopment of the site. In July 2008, iron oxide seeps were observed at the site. This series of documents details the response and investigation into the source of these seeps.
