In October 2020, Alberta and Canada signed the Agreement for the Conservation and Recovery of the Woodland Caribou in Alberta to facilitate woodland caribou recovery in Alberta. Alberta is committed to the implementation of this Agreement which supports provincial caribou recovery efforts including landscape-level planning, habitat conservation, management and recovery planning, caribou mortality and population management and caribou population and habitat monitoring. Alberta and Canada agreed to regularly report on the progress towards the commitments in this Agreement. These reports provide summaries of progress made and actions undertaken.

Description

The technical report summarizes temporal trends occurring for select water quality parameters within a 15-year dataset of water quality information collected during the Irrigation District Water Quality program. Temporal trends at the regional and sample site scale were conducted to determine overall change in water quality parameters and identify possible areas of concern. This information is critical for enabling the agriculture and irrigation sectors to be proactive in addressing environmental concerns, food safety and demonstrating stewardship of Alberta’s land and water resources.

The Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) Watersheds of Alberta represents a collection of five nested hierarchically structured drainage basin feature classes that have been created using the Hydrologic Unit Code system of classification developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) with accommodation to reflect the pre-existing Canadian classification system. Reports on a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project to remove CO2 from the process gas streams of the three hydrogen-manufacturing units which are a part of the Scotford Upgrader infrastructure. The Scotford Upgrader is owned by the Athabasca Oil Sands Project, a joint venture operated by Shell Canada Energy and owned by Canadian Natural Upgrading Limited, Chevron Canada Oil Sands Partnership, and 1745844 Alberta Ltd. The Upgrader is part of Shell’s Scotford facility located northeast of Edmonton.

Mercury (Hg) enters the environment through natural processes and human activities. There are three forms of Hg: elemental (metallic) mercury, inorganic mercury salts and organic mercury compounds. Methylmercury (MeHg) is often formed from inorganic mercury during biological processes such as methylation by microorganisms in water and sediment. MeHg can accumulate in aquatic organisms including fish. People are exposed to very low levels of mercury in the air, water and food. Some people may be exposed to relatively higher levels of mercury by eating MeHg-containing fish. MeHg accumulates in the human body over time and because it is a known neurotoxin, it is necessary to limit human exposure to MeHg. To protect public health, Health Canada has proposed mercury guidelines and advisories for fish consumption based on total mercury (THg; all forms of Hg in a sample).
