Description

The Land Suitability Rating System (LSRS) rating map illustrates the relative suitability of lands in Alberta for growing spring-seeded small grains and shows how the dominant LSRS codes are distributed across Alberta. The LSRS rating process improves on the more subjective and dated Canada Land Inventory rating process. The map combines the AGRASID 4.1 computed LSRS values of the agricultural area of the province with the SLC 3.2 computed LSRS values of the forested area of the province. Extended periods of extreme cold (below -38°C) can cause up to 95 per cent mortality of over-wintering mountain pine beetles, which is required to suppress populations. These maps display predicted per cent mortality, based on a mountain pine beetle overwinter mortality model used by the province to predict per cent mortality based on winter temperatures and location data. These mortality predictions, combined with aerial surveys and ground assessments conducted in August/September, help the province prioritize areas for single tree treatment and timber harvest control tactics implemented in the fall and winter.

In rural Alberta, 90 per cent of people use private well water supplies for domestic use (e.g., drinking, cooking, bathing). Domestic well water systems are not regulated by the provincial or federal governments. The Government of Alberta along with Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides water chemistry testing of private well water and information and advice on safe water for domestic purposes; however, it is the responsibility of well owners to ensure the quality and safety of their water supply. Water quality may be impacted by contamination from natural sources or human activities and cause noticeable aesthetic issues or potential health concerns. Water samples are collected and submitted by well owners through local AHS sites for analysis of routine chemistry and trace element parameters. To ensure sustainable management of our forest ecosystems, Alberta Forestry Division maintains a network of permanent sample plots (PSPs) across the forested regions of the province. The growth of a stand can be estimated directly by taking measurements of the same trees at periodic intervals. These plots provide a steady flow of measurement data to document forest growth and health over the long-term. PSP data support growth and yield modeling, inventory calibration, determination of the sustainable timber supply, stewardship reporting, and are a source of forest dynamics data sought by research organizations for innovation in forest monitoring and modeling.
