This manual reflects the standards and conventions used in the digital mapping plans produced by the Rural Utilities Division of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. The manual is intended to provide standards for the 1:20000 digital mapping plans, which are graphic digital files drawn to show surveyed gas line and customer locations for rural gas distribution systems.

Description

The standards in this publication are released under the Timber Management Regulation and represent rules to facilitate the collection, development, processing, documentation, tracking, custody and eventual use of forest reproductive materials. The forest genetic resources of Alberta are crucial to the long-term economic and ecological stability of the province. Without proper management, human activity can lead to genetic erosion, reduced fitness and loss of evolutionary resilience in wild populations, and can also reduce opportunities for development of new and useful plant varieties and gene products.

Seed testing is done to assess seedlot attributes and determine overall quality and value for seedling production and storage. Seed testing standards are based on scientific evidence and provide set procedures for facilities to conduct tests in a uniform manner and ensure comparable results for seed owners. The seed testing standards described are closely aligned with the International Rules for Seed Testing 2015 (ISTA 2015) and follow these procedures for sampling, moisture content determination, purity analysis, and seed weight determination.

Many of the principles are requirements for development on public lands, as stated in the standards and conditions of public lands formal dispositions, authorizations and approvals. These principles and guidelines are also appropriate and applicable to other land holders for the promotion and advancement of avoidance and minimal disturbance practices.

Description

Agricultural activities, including the production of livestock, result in greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Beef cattle, in particular, release methane (CH4) as a result of the digestion of feed materials in the rumen. These emissions are called enteric emissions and are a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities. Methane and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are also generated from manure storage and handling within beef cattle operations. These emissions are called manure emissions. This protocol for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in fed cattle addresses digestion and manure storage/handling sources of livestock greenhouse gas emissions. The protocol allows users to quantify greenhouse gas reductions using scientifically valid methodology and emission factors resulting from alterations in feeding strategies and other technologies in the finishing stages of beef cattle at feedlots in Alberta.

The scope of this protocol is limited to on-farm reductions of emissions from nitrogen sources and fuel use associated with the management of synthetic fertilizer, manure fertilizer and crop residues. Greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions associated with carbon sequestration in the soil and off-site emission reductions affected by the manufacture and distribution of nitrogen fertilizers are excluded from the protocol. The exclusion of off-site reductions of fertilizer manufacturing increases conservativeness in emission reduction calculations and limits the scope of quantification to those sources, sinks and/or reservoirs for which data are readily available.

This protocol quantifies decreases in greenhouse gas emissions associated with the raising of beef cattle by reducing the number of days required to get a feeder calf from birth to harvest. This applies to youthful cattle, or those cattle under 24 months of age. In this context, feeder cattle that spend less time in backgrounding lots, on pasture and in the feedlot result in decreased greenhouse gas emissions. Withdrawn as of March 31, 2020.
