Description

SWSW and CPS wheat are attractive crops for biofuel production due to the higher grain yield potential, weed competitiveness and starch content. From 2009 to 2012, field plot studies were conducted at five different soil zone/agro-ecological locations (Dark Brown, Thin Black – south, Thin Black – central, Black and Gray soil zones) in Alberta, with a focus on the Parkland Region. The study showed that SWSW and CPS wheat types can be grown successfully under dryland conditions in southern and central Alberta.

Using diverse crop rotations, which include three or four different crops, is generally the most desirable crop production practice. However, in the drier regions of southern Alberta, the pea-wheat rotation offers a number of significant advantages. Wheat yields after pea are often higher than after wheat as a result of increased soil nitrogen (N) availability, higher amounts of stored soil water and reduced disease potential. With the pea-wheat rotation, the need for nitrogen fertilizer inputs for pea and wheat are greatly reduced and often eliminated. From an economic and agronomic standpoint, the pea-wheat rotation can often be very profitable for southern Alberta dryland farmers.

The protein premiums offered on these classes of wheat show how each increase in protein level leads to better returns for the producer (see Table 1). Protein premiums are paid on 0.1 per cent increments, but only selective (0.5 per cent) increments are given to illustrate the premiums.

W inter cereal crops are excellent for inclusion in a crop rotation. Winter cereals include winter wheat, fall rye and winter triticale. Winter wheat is an excellent crop for many southern and central Alberta farmers to consider growing. Winter wheat should be direct-seeded in early September and is usually harvested several weeks earlier than spring wheat the next year. Therefore, including winter wheat in the crop rotation spreads out the workload and results in good time management for farmers.

It is caused by several species of Fusarium; however, Fusarium graminearum is the primary species involved. In 1999, Fusarium graminearum was declared a pest under the Alberta Agricultural Pests Act.

The wheat midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana) is found in most areas around the world wherever wheat is grown. In recent years, significant damage to wheat crops has been reported in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, southern British Columbia, Minnesota, North Dakota and Idaho. All wheat varieties are currently susceptible to wheat midge, but some are more seriously affected than others. Although the midge also attacks other members of the grass family, including barley, couch grass, intermediate wheat grass and rye, infestations on these plants are usually not serious enough to warrant control. Research and breeding for wheat midge resistant wheat varieties is underway at the Cereals Research Centre (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Winnipeg) and the Crop Development Centre (University of Saskatchewan).

Generally, direct seeding proved to be quite successful in establishing winter wheat. In most years, germination and emergence of winter wheat was superior on direct seeded plots over conventionally tilled plots. This outcome was the result of improved seedbed soil moisture and more uniform seedbed in the undisturbed soil. Results showed that nitrogen fertilizer can be successfully applied in the fall without reducing winter wheat survival. Applying all nitrogen fertilizer at the time of seeding in the fall is more effective than broadcasting all N fertilizer in the spring. Also, using a split application strategy can work reasonably well. This option is to apply a portion of the N fertilizer at the time of seeding, then broadcast the remaining N in the spring using ammonium nitrate fertilizer
