Description

The 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care is an agreement developed in 2004 between all provinces, territories and the federal government to ensure that Canadians have access to essential health care services when they need it. While the agreement is focused on five key areas of access (cancer, heart, diagnostic imaging, joint replacement and sight restoration), it also covers strategic investments in a number of areas that support improved access to health services, such as home care, prescription drugs, health promotion and disease prevention, primary health care, and health professions. This report shows the progress Alberta has made in implementing key strategies to date.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and one of the leading causes of developmental delay in children in Canada. The Physicians for FASD Prevention project, whose findings are presented in this report, provided valuable insight into the disparities between research findings and recommendations for FASD screening and prevention, and the realities of primary care physicians providing those services in every day clinical practice. This project attempted to develop and implement supports for physicians to improve FASD screening and prevention services they deliver to all women of childbearing age.

It also looks at some of the efforts being taken by the Government of Alberta to encourage healthy behaviours and thus prevent chronic disease.

The Premier's Advisory Council on Health made its first recommendation "to stay healthy." It called on the Government of Alberta to set clear 10-year objectives and targets for health, focusing on reducing risk factors, and to track progress towards those targets. In response, this Framework for A Healthy Alberta sets objectives and targets to guide the Government of Alberta's action in promoting health and preventing disease and injury to the year 2012. As well, regional health authorities and community organizations can use the Framework to guide their policies, programs and services.

Description

A survey of the Alberta general public was conducted in August and September of 2002 to determine self-reported behaviours, perceptions and attitudes about healthy eating and being physically active. The survey was conducted prior to a promotional campaign by Alberta Health and Wellness to positively affect the behaviour and attitudes of Albertans in these areas, and was meant to serve as a baseline against which to compare changes in attitudes and behaviours after the campaign was launched. The survey results indicate a gap between the public’s perceived knowledge and perceptions about their effort in the areas of physical activity and healthy eating and their behaviour in these regards. The survey also reveals there are opportunities to motivate Albertans to increase healthy eating and physical activity.
