All landfills and composting facilities regulated by Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) are required to have certified operators. This includes any Class II and Class III landfill that accepts only industrial waste. Composting facilities that are regulated through the Natural Resources Conservation Board do not need to have certified operators under this program. The Alberta Landfill and Composting Facility Operator Certification Program involves industry associations as certifying partners. The certifying partners: Administer exams; Manage certificates; Provide training programs. The Northern Lights Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA-NLC) and the Compost Council of Canada (CCC) are the certifying partners representing the landfill industry and composting industry, respectively.

A number of studies have been carried out for the Town of High River and the Alberta Flood Recovery Task Force, resulting in a number of proposals to mitigate future floods. This report presents a review of two reports in which flood mitigating measures are being proposed for High River, and presents advice on whether the proposals presented in the two reports should be implemented.

This wildlife status report looks at the chestnut-collared longspur, a small ground-nesting passerine that is native to the shortgrass and mixed grass prairies throughout the United States and Canada, including the Grassland Natural Region of Alberta. The species is fairly common in Alberta, but their general status was re-evaluated in 2010 from Secure to Sensitive due to significant annual declines in their population. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

Flood hazard studies and mapping have been produced by the Government of Alberta since the 1970s. Initially there was no formal program associated with this work. In most cases, studies and mapping were provided to communities for information and planning purposes. The Canada-Alberta Flood Damage Reduction Program was initiated in 1989 between the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada. The program was created to standardize and cost-share production of flood hazard studies and mapping, in order to increase public safety and awareness of flood hazards with an ultimate goal to mitigate flood damages. The program expired in 1999 before flood hazard studies and mapping were completed for all of the original candidate communities. AEP continues to produce studies and mapping under the separate and independent Flood Hazard Identification Program.
