Description

This resource includes a summary, highlights and background information of a study undertaken to provide information on long-term planning and opportunity for handling water within the Designated Industrial Zone in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, with the aim of developing a regionalized hybrid water supply and distribution model to optimize the use of new and existing water supply infrastructure within the area. The study, prepared by Stantec Consulting under contract to Alberta Environment and Parks, also considered options for wastewater management and explored management approaches through the use of a jurisdictional review. The full Stantec report is included as an attachment to the publication.

This policy replaces the Water Conservation and Allocation Policy for Oilfield Injection (2006), incorporating water conservation as a requirement for all major upstream oil and gas operations.

The Wapiti River Water Management Plan Steering Committee was established in 2012 to develop recommendations for water use in the Wapiti River basin. The steering committee engaged with the public, stakeholders and Indigenous communities and organizations and developed a draft version of a managagement plan which would provide guidance and recommendations on balancing the needs of municipal water supply, industry uses, agriculture and other uses, while ensuring a healthy aquatic ecosystem in the Alberta portion of the Wapiti River basin. Feedback was solicited by releasing this draft plan and summary documents in this record for public review.

Contains materials used in targeted information sessions for the Surface Water Allocation Directive internal operational policy. Sessions held in Calgary and Edmonton, October 1 and 2, 2018 for stakeholders involved in Water Act licence applications. Environmental non-governmental organizations also participated in the information sessions and information letters were sent to Indigenous organizations and communities. Feedback was also received through an online survey open from October 1 to November 9, 2018, and via email and letters, leading to in-person follow up meetings when requested. The final policy provides operational water allocation decision guidance based on scientifically defensible rulesets to address the cumulative effects of water diversions while considering economic objectives.

Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Special Areas Water Supply project. The Special Areas Water Supply Project is a multi-purpose water supply project that would divert water from the Red Deer River to a large area in east-central Alberta, including the Special Areas. The proposed project consists of a pump station and pipeline to divert water from the Red Deer River southwest of Stettler through a 97.5 kilometre pipeline to a storage reservoir at the headwaters of Sounding and Berry creeks at the north western boundary of the Special Areas. Water would be distributed within the Sounding and Berry Creek basins through existing streams, improved natural channels, and canals. A number of multi-purpose reservoirs would store and release water throughout the system. For more information on the environmental assessment process visit ea.alberta.ca.
