Description

Written for the biofuel production facility or project developer, this protocol quantifies the emission reductions from the avoidance of fossil fuel consumption when the fossil fuel is replaced by biofuels on an equivalent energy potential basis. The protocol also includes reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to any heat/power production and electricity generation related to the process, and from the avoidance of landfilling any materials which may be diverted for conversion to biofuel. The protocol is not intended to be prescriptive, but instead serve as a generic “recipe” for biofuel facility owners and operators to follow in order to meet measurement, monitoring and GHG quantification requirements.

Description

The purpose of this doucment is to assist offset market participants (protocol developers) wishing to develop quantification protocols for use in the Alberta offset system where the intended final purchaser of offset credits generated is a facility regulated under the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation. Alberta's offset market was initiated as a market instrument to support compliance under the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation. The Regulation requires all large, industrial facilities in Alberta emitting over 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year to reduce their emissions intensity by 12 per cent per year from their government approved baseline emission intensity.

This applies to youthful cattle, or those cattle under 24 months of age. Agricultural activities, including the production of livestock, result in greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. Beef cattle, in particular, release methane (CH4) as a result of the digestion of feed materials in the rumen. These emissions are called enteric emissions and are a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities. Other emission sources for cattle include methane and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are generated from manure storage and handling within beef cattle operations. This protocol for reducing the number of days on feed for beef cattle addresses both digestion and manure storage and handling emission sources for livestock greenhouse gas emissions. It allows users to quantify greenhouse gas reductions using scientifically valid equations and emission factors resulting from a reduction in the number of days required to complete the finishing stage of beef cattle in a feedlot resulting in a decrease in both enteric and manure...

Description

The scope of this protocol is limited to on-farm reductions of emissions from nitrogen sources and fuel use associated with the management of fertilizer, manure and crop residues for each annual or perennial crop type grown. Lands grazed by animals are excluded from this protocol as are greenhouse gas reductions associated with carbon sequestration in the soil and the off-site emission reductions affected by the manufacture and distribution of nitrogen fertilizers. The exclusion of off-site reductions of fertilizer manufacturing increases conservativeness in emission reduction calculations and limits the scope of quantification to those sources, sinks and/or reservoirs for which data are readily available.
