This data set reflects child care programs in Alberta licensed under the Child Care Licensing Act (prior to February 2021) and under the Early Learning and Child Care Act (February 2021 and after).   Data prior to February 2021 included reflects child care programs in Alberta licensed under the Child Care Licensing Act. Program types under the Child Care Licensing Act included day care programs, out-of-school care programs, preschool programs, group family child care, family day homes (approved by a licensed family day home agency), and innovative child care programs.   In February 2021, child care licensing changed from program-based to facility-based under the Early Learning and Child Care Act. There are now four types of licenses: facility-based programs, group family child care programs, family day homes (approved by a licensed family day home agency), and innovative child care programs. This designated review focused on the deaths of two young children who received child intervention (CI) services while in parental care. The review team gathered information and conducted an analysis of CI involvement by reviewing relevant documentation and research. The team also interviewed CI practitioners, community partners, and subject matter experts. An analysis of the information and review of research informed the findings and recommendations. Throughout the designated review, the review team sought to understand the context of the worksites and communities, the level of service provided, and the decisions made during CI involvement.

Building Strength, Inspiring Hope: A Provincial Action Plan for Youth Suicide Prevention 2019 – 2024 was released in March 2019. One of the actions the Government of Alberta committed to was to support the co-creation of First Nations and Métis youth suicide prevention graphic novels to provide an awareness resource that is reflective of the experiences of Indigenous youth. Children’s Services partnered with Indigenous Story Studio to create two graphic novels related to suicide prevention and mental health promotion; one reflects a First Nations story and the other a Métis story, both with a focus on wellness. The graphic novels were created through engagement with Indigenous youth across Alberta.

The Indigenous Cultural Understanding Framework is a development and delivery plan for training to ensure Children's Services staff have the knowledge, skills and abilities to deliver culturally appropriate support, services and programs to Indigenous children, youth, families and communities. The framework supports government's response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples calling for more education to public servants on Indigenous history, treaties and residential schools.
