Water supply in the South Saskatchewan River Basin in Alberta is naturally subject to highly variable flows. Capture and controlled release of these flows is critical in the management of the available water supply. Expanding population, economic growth and climate variability add additional challenges to managing our limited water supply. This study identifies management of existing reservoirs and the development of additional water storage sites as potential solutions to SSRB water management challenges.

A reliable, constant supply of good quality water is an essential part of any livestock enterprise. Automatic waterers are standard equipment on most farms because of their convenience and efficiency. They consist of an insulated base and a heated bowl that automatically fills with water from a pressurized line. A float-operated valve controls the level of the water in the bowl. A thermostat, set at 4 to 6° C, regulates the water temperature in the bowl.

An insulated pump house provides excellent protection from freezing and contamination for the farm water pressure system. It is necessary to keep the pressure system warm and dry. In the past, pits were often dug around the well head to house the pressure system. Unfortunately, these pits often caused well contamination and safety hazards. Pits have not been allowed since environmental regulations changed in 1993. Locating the pressure system in the house basement is an alternative, but is not always feasible since the well may be too far from the house. A pump house is often a more convenient point for distribution to other areas of the farm.

Iron bacteria are a common nuisance in water wells, but are not considered a health hazard. They use dissolved iron in the water as an energy source and leave slimy deposits of red iron hydrate as a by-product. This slime will coat the inside of the well casing, water piping and equipment, creating problems such as reduced well yield, restricted water flow and red staining of plumbing fixtures and laundry. However, all iron- staining problems are not necessarily caused by iron bacteria. The iron naturally present in the water can also cause significant problems.

A submersible pump is a centrifugal pump, which is attached to an electric motor and operates while submerged in water. The sealed electric motor spins a series of impellers. Each impeller in the series forces water through a diffuser into the eye of the one above it. In a typical 4 inch submersible pump, each impeller will add a approximately 9 psi of pressure. for example, a typical 10-stage pump will develop a pressure of about 90 psi at its outlet (i.e.10 impellers x 9 psi).
