The Minister of Sustainable Resource Development created the Flat Top Complex Wildfire Review Committee to assess Alberta's wildfire management program with a focus on the department's response to the wildfires that entered the Town of Slave Lake and nearby communities of Poplar Estates, Canyon Creek, and Widewater in May, 2011. The information in this report was prepared by the Documentation and Technical Support Group and submitted to the Committee to assist them in providing recommendations to the Minister.

Description

The Minister of Sustainable Resource Development created the Flat Top Complex Wildfire Review Committee to assess Alberta's wildfire management program with a focus on the department's response to the wildfires that entered the Town of Slave Lake and nearby communities of Poplar Estates, Canyon Creek, and Widewater in May, 2011. This report presents the findings of the committee and makes 21 recommendations. The Government of Alberta has fully met the intent of all 21 recommendations, and initiatives that respond to the recommendations have been incorporated within Agriculture and Forestry's wildfire management program.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 0900045 allocated to Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. (Formerly known as Daishowa-Marubeni International Ltd.). The FMP covers Forest Management Unit P19 located entirely within the Upper and Lower Peace Land-Use Framework planning regions in northern Alberta; it falls within the Dry Mixedwood, Central Mixedwood, Upper Boreal Highlands and Lower Boreal Highlands Natural Subregions.

Crown forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. A component of a FMP called a timber supply analysis (TSA) was prepared by the Government of Alberta. The TSA covers Forest Management Unit (FMU) S10, a Crown managed unit located in northern Alberta within the Central Mixedwood and Lower Boreal Highlands Natural Subregions.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 9000028 allocated to West Fraser Mills Ltd. (Slave Lake), (formerly known as Slave Lake Pulp Corporation). The FMP covers Forest Management Unit (FMU) S20 in north central Alberta. It is located almost entirely within the Upper Athabasca Land-Use Framework planning region. There is a small area in the southwest corner of FMU S20 that falls within the Upper Peace Land-use Framework planning region. It falls within the Upper Foothills, Lower Foothills, Central Mixedwood and Dry Mixedwood Natural Subregions
