Description

The growing challenges of ensuring safe, reliable drinking water in Alberta have increased the need for a more integrated, collaborative approach to minimize water treatment costs, reduce public health risks and protect drinking water sources. In 2018, the Government of Alberta partnered with the Alberta Water Council to form a multi-sector project team to provide guidance for protecting sources of drinking water in Alberta. This guide provides advice on how to protect drinking water sources through source water protection planning.

Description

Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Special Areas Water Supply project. The Special Areas Water Supply Project is a multi-purpose water supply project that would divert water from the Red Deer River to a large area in east-central Alberta, including the Special Areas. The proposed project consists of a pump station and pipeline to divert water from the Red Deer River southwest of Stettler through a 97.5 kilometre pipeline to a storage reservoir at the headwaters of Sounding and Berry creeks at the north western boundary of the Special Areas. Water would be distributed within the Sounding and Berry Creek basins through existing streams, improved natural channels, and canals. A number of multi-purpose reservoirs would store and release water throughout the system. For more information on the environmental assessment process visit ea.alberta.ca.

Presents the results of a study funded by the Irrigation Council to investigate the opportunities for developing additional storage to improve future water security in southern Alberta. After reviewing previous studies and doing additional modelling and analysis, this study determined there is limited opportunity for additional water storage in southern Alberta. The consultant reviewed existing studies and conducted modelling within the boundaries of current regulations and apportionment agreements.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a groundwater evaluation for a sub-region of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. The area of interest included the area south of the Oldman River and west of the Belly River within the Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26. The main population centre in the area is the Town of Fort Macleod. The evaluation was done by collecting readily available data relating to the groundwater evaluation; it did not include any field work and no new data was generated.

There is little doubt that had the Villages involved in this Commission presented this water supply system that was to only involve their water usage volumes alone, the project would not have been approved or supported by the Alberta Government. Other alternatives to their water issues would have had to be determined and examined. If it concluded that the Municipal District of Rocky View No.44 and Kneehill County's decision not to annually contribute in net water volume based on their 55% water allocation share nor to be responsible for their 55% share of the debenture debt is not appropriate and lead exclusively to the direct financial deficits of the Commission, then these rural municipalities and tem alone should be held responsible for the financial demise of the Commission.

Expanding population, economic growth and climate variability add additional challenges to managing our limited water supply. This study identifies management of existing reservoirs and the development of additional water storage sites as potential solutions to water management challenges.

Description

Bitumen produced from Alberta's oil sands must be upgraded into synthetic crude oil before it can be processed by oil refineries. A number of companies have proposed to construct upgraders in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. These upgraders consume large quantities of water for process, cooling and other demands. This study provides an analysis of water volumes and qualities needed for the upgrading process, and outlines a process to select Best Available Technology Economically Achievable for upgrader wastewater treatment. The results of the study are intended to help regulators and other interested parties assess the impacts of proposed upgrader projects.
