Collected from a variety of sources, the Statistics and Data Development Section monitors statistical indicators of agri-food activity for Alberta. The Agri-Food Statistics Update is designed to provide users with commentary on current issues, trends and new developments related to agriculture and the food and beverage processing industries. Up-to-date statistics are supplemented with informative charts and diagrams. To gauge Alberta’s performance, comparative data and information are often available for Canada and the provinces.

The Land Suitability Rating System (LSRS) rating map illustrates the relative suitability of lands in Alberta for growing spring-seeded small grains and shows how the dominant LSRS codes are distributed across Alberta. The LSRS rating process improves on the more subjective and dated Canada Land Inventory rating process. The map combines the AGRASID 4.1 computed LSRS values of the agricultural area of the province with the SLC 3.2 computed LSRS values of the forested area of the province. The data are used by Agriculture and Agri-food Canada and other federal departments to develop and administer agricultural policies. This information is also used by provincial departments and industry stakeholders for production/price analysis, and economic research.

This Alberta Official Statistic presents annual per cent change for Alberta and Canada real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Primary Agriculture Industries, 2008-2014. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a measure of the economic production which takes place within a geographical area. The term "gross" in GDP means that capital consumption costs, that is the costs associated with the depreciation of capital assets (buildings, machinery and equipment), are included. The production estimates are prepared for 215 separate industries using the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). Real GDP is gross domestic product adjusted for price changes. By taking out the impact of fluctuation in prices, real GDP allows people to more accurately measure the changes in total output and service for a jurisdiction.
