This Alberta Official Statistic contains 2000-2014 crop production data. Crop production statistics are designed to provide accurate and timely estimates of production of major grains and oilseeds in Alberta. Usage Considerations
The data are based on farm surveys conducted by Statistics Canada. The target population for crop production surveys includes all farms in Canada enumerated in the Census of Agriculture except those on Indian reserves and farms from the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon and Atlantic region. Institutional farms are also excluded from the target population.
This is a sample survey with a cross-sectional design. The frame is derived from the Census of Agriculture and stratified according to farm size (acreage). A random sample of farms is selected from each stratum along with a weight. These weights are used to expand the data obtained from the sample to an estimate of the entire stratum.
Reference periods of the collected data: Area (the last week of March and the week at the end of May and beginning of June); Yield and production (the week at the end of July and beginning of August, the second week of September, and from the last week of October until the third week of November); Stocks (the first week of January, the last week of March, and the week at the end of July and beginning of August, except grain corn and soybeans at the second week of September). There is about a three-week period between the end of the collection period and the release of the data. Data collection for the field crop surveys is undertaken using both CATI and Electronic Data Reporting (EDR) systems. No further follow-up is done.
Field crop estimates are based on a random sample of agricultural operations and, as such, are subject to sampling and non-sampling errors.
