Description

The primary purposes of this project were to revise the 1981 ecoregion classification of Alberta, update the climatic characterization, and develop an ecodistrict classification at a 1:1 000 000 map scale. Revision of the classification and mapping was based on both new data and a reassessment of pre-1980 information. Characterization of the climate associated with each ecoregion was based on monthly data from 1st January 1979 to 31 st August 1989. These data included eight primary monthly variables: mean, mean minimum, mean maximum, absolute minimum and maximum temperature; total monthly precipitation; number of days with measurable precipitation; and number of days with temperatures equal to or less than O°C. Derived variables included potential evapotranspiration deficits and growing degree days. A total of 211 recording stations were analyzed .

Presents the results of a project to conduct terrain and vegetation resource inventories of the Notikewin South area. This information was required as data for land use evaluations and resource planning and management. The Notikewin South study area is located in northwestern Alberta and comprises some 15,000 square kilometres of land bounded on the south and east by the Peace River, on the west by the Alberta-British Columbia border and on the north by the Notikewin River.

Description

The McGregor Lake area was chosen as a prospective Natural Area because of its representative foothills vegetation and the presence of Oplapanax Horridum (Devil's club). A biophysical survey of the McGregor Lake Natural area was undertaken from August 15-21, 1987. The vegetation and physical features of 25 stands, representing seven major vegetation types, were described. The vegetation types were mapped at 1:15,000. The vegetation and flora were found to be characteristic of the Boreal Uplands Ecoregion. Approximately 80 percent of the study area is dominated by lodgepole pine and/or white spruce forests. Other habitats include poplar forests, shrub-forb thickets, tall grass meadows and a treed fen.

Sandhill habitats contain a major concentration of significant features, including numerous rare, threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Based on recommendations from previous studies on reptiles and amphibians and rare plants in Alberta's grasslands and parkland natural regions, a broad study on sandhill habitats was undertaken in 1987. The study area encompassed all sand plains and sandhill habitats from the Red Deer River south to the United States boundary, west to highway 2 and east to the Saskatchewan border. In addition, several sites north of the Red Deer River north to the David Lake area were investigated. Research in 1987 was undertaken on rare, threatened and endangered wildlife and plants. Rare, threatened and endangered plants were studied to map their distributions, and to assess the degree to which dune stabilization was occurring and how this affected native plants. A biophysical inventory of several contiguous land parcels adjacent to or near Coyote Lake, Leduc County, Alberta, was completed in 1987. The total area involved was 647.5 ha. The inventory included a description of the physical environment, which was based on a literature review; field identification analyses of vegetation types; an assessment of the mamma, bird, amphibian, reptile and fish fauna; vertebrate fauna; mapping of the vegetation types; photographs and documentation of rare species and new records of distribution; and recommendations for future studies.
