The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an indicator of changes in consumer prices. It is obtained by comparing the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers over time. CPI data and methodology is collected and maintained by Statistics Canada.

A nutritious food basket is a food-costing tool that is a measure of the cost of healthy eating based on current nutrition recommendations. The current Edmonton Nutritious Food Basket consists of 67 food items falling into 10 food groups which contribute similar nutrients to the diet. The food basket lists 22 age-gender groups and a reference family of four, and reports the weekly cost of reach food category as well as the total weekly cost.
