Description

This study was initialized to test and validate an innovative survey technique adopting the BioSonics DT-X echosounder, which has been successfully applied for surveying vegetation and sediment in many estuary and lake systems, but not for a shallow riverine system, like the Bow River in Alberta, Canada. The site for this study was selected to be a 500 meter reach on the Bow River just below the City of Calgary’s major wastewater treatment plant, the Bonnybrook Plant, where substantial levels of aquatic vegetation exist during summer. The BioSonics survey was performed three times under different growing seasons in 2010.

Description

The City of Calgary, in partnership with Alberta Environment, plans to create a hydraulic model of the Bow and Elbow Rivers through Calgary, to support emergency response planning and operations through flood inundation mapping. The model will provide additional perspective on current flood hazard area management and will provide a basis for increased understanding of fish habitat, river morphology and erosion, water quality and storm water runoff impacts. The first component of the project was a hydrology study, which was contracted to Golder Associates Ltd. and is the subject of this report. The hydrology study is required to determine the flood magnitudes for Bow River and its tributaries through the city for use in the hydraulic model.

These objectives relate to the volume and quality of water to remain in rivers for the protection of a natural water body and its aquatic environment. They are flow targets under the first-in-time, first-in-right priority water allocation system and will apply to all new licences and existing licences with a retrofit provision. The objectives recommended in the South Saskatchewan River basin's management plan provide direction on how to increase flows in the highly allocated Bow, Oldman and South Saskatchewan River sub-basins and permit allocations in the Red Deer River sub-basin. They are subject to future review and refinement in light of improved knowledge and information about the aquatic environment and water quality.

A number of rules and guidelines and a large number of monitoring sites to are used to facilitate the computation of natural flows and to ensure that water-sharing agreements are being adhered to. This study examines the recorded and naturalized flows of the St. Mary River, Oldman River, Bow River, Red Deer River, and the South Saskatchewan River to evaluate the relative contribution of the various sub-basins to Apportionment.

Description

The Bow Valley protected areas are public lands designated under the Provincial Parks Act to be maintained in a natural state for use by the public for recreation, education or other specified purposes. They include Bow Valley Wildland Park, Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park and Bow Valley Provincial Park. The Bow Valley protected areas were designated or expanded by Order in Council under the province’s Special Places program in 1998. The designations reflected the consensus of a volunteer Local Committee that included conservation groups, industry, recreationists and local governments. From 1998 to September 2000, the Bow Valley protected areas covered an area of 75,408 acres (30,517 hectares) of provincial Crown land in the Bow River watershed. In September 2000, a further 20, 474 acres (8289 hectares) in the Spray Valley was added to the Bow Valley Wildland Park.
