Description

This report provides the results of seven technical integration workshops sponsored by the Oil Sands Monitoring program for the 2018-2019 fiscal year held between the end of October 2018 and early February 2019. The seven workshops covered the following topics : terrestrial biological monitoring; groundwater; surface water and aquatic biology; atmospheric deposition, geospatial science, mercury, and predictive modelling. This report is a summary of detailed notes taken during each workshop.

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for arsenic. Arsenic and its compounds are used in a number of applications and industrial processes. Chrome copper arsenate is used as a wood preservative. Other uses of arsenic and its compounds include the manufacturing of glass, metallurgy, the manufacturing of gallium arsenide for the electronics industry and some medical applications. In Alberta, the power and electrical utilities sector as well as the wood industry (wood preserving) contribute to arsenic emissions.

Description

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for acrolein. Acrolein is a reactive unsaturated aldehyde that exists as a highly volatile clear or yellow liquid. The largest commercial use of acrolein is as a biocide for aquatic environments, specifically for eradicating floating aquatic weeds or bacteria in produced water. In Alberta, acrolein has also been used to scavenge hydrogen sulphide from produced fluid in petroleum operations.

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen dioxide is an irritating gas with an acrid, pungent odour. It is corrosive, highly oxidizing and non-combustible. It can be released directly to the atmosphere but is often produced by the conversion of nitric oxide released from combustion processes. In the presence of sunlight, nitrogen dioxide can lead to the formation of ozone, nitric acid and nitrate-containing respirable particles.

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for hydrogen fluoride. Hydrogen fluoride is a highly water soluble gas with a strong, irritating odour. It is used in many industrial processes, including the manufacture of fluorocarbons and the production of aluminum fluorides and synthetic cryolite (aluminum industry). Hydrogen fluoride is also used in the fluoridation of drinking water.

Isopropanol is a colourless, clear, volatile liquid under standard conditions. It can react with air or oxygen to form unstable peroxides. Isopropanol has widespread use as a solvent and as a component of many industrial, commercial and consumer products. Isopropanol is also a naturally occurring metabolic product in a variety of microorganisms and plants; as such, it occurs naturally in a wide variety of foods.

It occurs naturally in food and is also added as flavouring to foods. This compound is used predominately in the production of plasticizers for PVC resins, hexyl esters, and arylates. It is also used in textiles and as a solvent and wetting agent.
